::Status of Women in Iran.
According to Islam, existence, with all contrasts and differences, is a unified and interrelated divine system. Men and women are complementary to one another and both enjoy equal status. Therefore, equality between men and women is an inherent and assured fact. Differences defined in the progressive laws of Islam for men and women are based on roles played and responsibilities assumed by them. In fact, the rights and privileges specified for women in Islam arise from their natural and permanent requirements. Because of women's physical characteristics and their role in creation, some of the laws in Islam give special privileges to them. Seeing women and men equal in all aspects is, indeed, a discriminatory approach towards women and tends to violate some of their natural rights. Thus, it is best for women to participate in development with due consideration to their physical and spiritual needs.
Men and women, equally, should endeavor to fulfil their ideals through the advancement of knowledge, promotion of understanding, safeguarding of human integrity, enjoyment of the gifts of life, benefiting from individual and social freedoms and the creation of a better world to live in.

On the other hand, women's profound sense of compassion and deep emotions are of great significance in safeguarding morality and humanistic qualities in society, which are so crucial in the prevention of cruelty and atrocities that are a permanent threat to human survival. It is for these reasons that women enjoy special status in education. Women have the power to influence social values and, therefore, must strive to increase their potential in accordance with moral values. The educational influence of women goes far beyond the upbringing of their own children; it embraces the entire human society.
The Islamic government is committed to the provision of all necessary means, including appropriate legislation, to enhance women's scientific, educational, social and political capacities in order to enable women to have intellectual, logical and moral participation in the progress of society. During their presence in various activities, Islamic dress (hijab) is protection against the perpetration of abuse and cruelty against women. Obviously, one's behavior and the dress one wears is a reflection of one's beliefs and the set of values a person holds.
In summary, we conclude that Islam emphasizes equality and not unqualified similarity of treatment of men and women and it has foreseen a special status for women in order to protect their rights unequivocally.
:: The Role of Women in the Family .
The great human society consists of smaller units called "the family" that is based on human love and understanding, not on carnal and other desires. Woman is the symbol of divine beauty. She emanates mercy and kindness and with the help of these serene qualities establishes a good, stable family. Therefore, the integrity of the family rests with the woman. As long as the basis of benevolence has not been formed between the members of the family, the greater human society will never be based on co-operation, mutual understanding and friendship. The crucial element that maintains forgiveness, kindness and sacrifice in the family is the mother, who strengthens the bonds between the family members and educates and trains the children in a healthy, united environment. Whoever disrupts and unravels these family bonds shall be deprived of divine benevolence.

WOMEN AND ART
In most European languages the words "Garden" and "Paradise" are both related to the term <paradiza>, which in old Persian means "an enclosure". In Iran the garden is the most evocative image of the supreme happiness that this world can offer; a pleasure to the senses and the soul.
The carpet is an essential facet of the art of the living and therefore of the basic culture of the Iranian people.
A rug, with its wealth of colour and symbolic designs, represents a kind of victory over the wilderness of the desert. The tree of life is the sign of eternity; and the pomegranate is the sign of abundance and the incarnation of happiness. There are also doves of peace, and parrots of love. A carpet so patiently woven is really an image of paradise.
The Iranian woman in history contributed to the delicate design, beauty and harmony of her family exactly in the same manner in which she created her artful Persian carpets. This way a woman prepared the way for the others' elevation to spiritual perfection.
Since literature and arts are the most beautiful vessels for conveying cultural messages, one of the characteristic of the Iranian woman, throughout the ages, has been artistry. The tribal dress of the rural Iranian woman, made by herself and looking like the most beautiful paintings, tells of her tribe's cultural, artistic and historical roots. The artistry of tribal women can be seen on their dresses, rugs, tents sugar cups, horse saddles, and other objects. Although the artistry of city dwelling women is less evident, you can hardly find and Iranian woman who is not adept at once form of art or another. ToDay, the Muslim Iranian woman is active in all artistic fields, such as poetry, storywriting, playwriting, cinematography, graphics, music, sculpture and other forms of artistic expression. You would rarely come across joint art exhibitions, where women are not participating alongside men. |

| WOMEN AND ISLAM
The Iranian women draw much of their strength from the laws of Islam. Islam promotes women's full participation in all aspects of national life. Women are encouraged to take up social and economic activities. Under Islamic principles, women have equal access to financial resources and ownership of land and property. Rights to independent income, and control over their family inheritance are indisputably guaranteed for Muslim women.
Islam granted women suffrage some 1400 years ago, when Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) established the first Islamic government in Medina. Though certain reactionary secular powers gradually restrained women's rights, Islamic ideology and principles remained as a source of inspiration for Muslims in general and Muslim women in particular, until the Day came to revive their religious and cultural heritage.

ANAHITA
(Women and Mythical Deities)
1. Nearly every ancient religion has preserved the memory of the mother
goddess in whose person people venerated the very principle of existence.
It was a symbol of fertility and abundance which the nave image represented.
These were represented, in varying degrees of crudity, in a female personage;
and, they are found on a great number of archaeological sites in the Iranian Plateau. The decorative repertory of the pottery of the forth millennium is made up of such elements as the horns of a bull or an ibex, a bird wing, a lion's head and the foot of some wading birds, to mention but a few examples. Her cult was subsequently replaced by that of male deities, of whom she remained both wife and mother.
2. In the pre-Zoroastrian Iran, Anahita was the goddess for water, rain, abundance, blessing, fertility, marriage, love, motherhood, birth and victory. This goddess was the manifestation of women's perfection. Ancient kings were crowned by their queens in Anahita's temple in order to gain her protection and support. Anahita's blessing would bring fertility and abundance to the country.

| WOMEN AND SPORTS
The Islamic government has initiated strong measures to bring women's sport into the main stream of national development planning. The first step was taken by the establishment of a Sport Research Committee, in 1988, to study women's athletic needs nationwide. This committee provides a strong basis for planning women's sport activities.
The next significant measure was the appointment of a woman as "deputy director" of the National Committee of Olympics.
Such steps brought women's sport into light. In 1991, the first Islamic Countries Congress for Women's Sport was held to provide the ground for women's participation in regional and international contests.
During recent years, Iranian women, including the handicapped, have taken part in many national and international contests, and proved their endurance and high potentials.
